Why I Like What I Do
An Essay My Business Coach Made Me Write
By Meghan Wier

First of all, let me say that there are too many miserable people in the world. Now, there is plenty of legitimate misery…famine, war, abuse… and I do not wish to demine these in any way. If you suffer from any such atrocity, by all means, you have a right to be miserable.

The misery that erks me is the illegitimate kind. The griping, the indecision, the defeat that people let fester around them like an old splinter underneath a toe nail. Frankly, it is unwarranted given the actual misery that exists and yet these people spread their illegitimate misery until it savagely infects those around them.

So what does that have to do with me liking what I do you ask? Plain and simple, I do not seek illegitimate misery and I shirk it whenever possible…ergo I would not do anything I would not like to do, so no matter what I did, it would be something I like!

It is really a circular argument, or rather circular non-argument, but does not get to the crux of the actual “why,” and I recognize the “why” is the purpose for the activity, so I digress…

I like what I do, because I like to solve problems. I like to get stuff done. I like to make progress out of situations where no progress is being made, and I like to eliminate griping, indecision and defeat.

My medium for that is communication. I find the words that say what it is you do and why YOU do them and why YOU like what you do. I provide avenues for people to connect and for businesses to be relatable. Words to me are a true art-form, woven together in ways that can be precise and crisp and perfect, or in ways that are more whimsical and imperfectly eloquent. Words can say what needs to be said, and words can be obtuse and never get to the point.

All that aside, I am a creative person, but my “unique value proposition” is that I am at my core, a pragmatic solution-finder who implements proven process to get things done. I like being a thought-leader, an idea-person, a “what-if” dreamer—but I never let myself get far from the “let’s make it happen” reality. I recognize that a good idea is only an idea—and that is just not enough. Concepts do not solve problems.

Marketing people all too often come up with these great ideas that they have no intention of implementing. They are not interested in the development, the analytics or the results. They like to talk in terms of “impressions” and “branding” and that is all well and good. I will say these things too, certainly, but the reason I like what I do is because I like helping to find a creative solution and then making it happen. I like what I do because there is no misery, my customers’ or mine at the end of a project. Because misery comes from inaction, from entrapment and from being brought down. I seek to provide a plan of action, to free people from the tasks and the ignorance. I work to elevate. I work to eliminate people’s perceived and illegitimate misery through the power of words and ideas and solutions.

And I like that. And I like what I do.

PS: Once illegitimate misery is eradicated, my plan for world domination does include removing the legitimate varieties. – m

There is a lot going on this week, just like all weeks… but I find myself with a few good minutes to make some updates. We are working on some fun projects, including writing website copy for a new website that going up in the next couple weeks and doing a lot of great business blogging.

I am getting prepped for Peg Casey’s new entries with the newest issue of the Quarterly Coupon Magazine out any day now — That is always such a fun day! There is nothing better than the feeling of getting a great coupon that you can use at a favorite restaurant, or finding out about a new retailer because of their ad in Peg’s magazine.

I recently had a bunch of photos taken by a local Charlotte photographer – Jerry Litaker – so you will probably see a lot of me here… he did such a good job of making me look good (not always an easy task!) I was not the “model model” and appreciate his patience in getting the right pics.

Here is some news you can use: my business networking group Ballantyne at 9 is currently recruiting new members. We are 10 strong and need 20 to charter as a BNI group here in Charlotte. So… please come visit on Mondays, at 9am. The new website is “under construction” — but feel free to go and check that out! We are looking for a property casualty person asap… so if you know someone… let me know.

As always… feel free to email me!
